Island (2022) - Pilot Episode Review: "Nice Special Effects"

Chingus, Happy New Year! I already watched it days ago but I was just able to encode my thoughts on the new series entitled " Island" just today this was because of the Holidays. "Island" was TVING's most recent offering, starring Kim Nam-Gil, Lee Da-Hee, Cha Eun-Woo, and Sung Joon.

The story is set on Jeju Island, where three people will band together to fight evil that is attempting to destroy the world. Van, played by Kim Nam-Gil, is one of the three who was raised to protect the world from evil. He trained to be a weapon, and now he fights evil and even kills those who become possessed. He does not show emotion when killing the possessed victims, but he is filled with guilt.

Won Mi-Ho, played by Lee Da-Hee, is the daughter of a wealthy family who owns a large corporation. She causes so much trouble that she is sent to Jeju Island to work as a teacher. She is then drawn into a case involving ghosts.

Cha Eun Woo played John, a Catholic Priest who performs exorcisms. His noble goal is to save lives and cleanse the world of evil. Sung-Joon portrayed Goong Tang. He was raised alongside Van, but due to an incident, he now fights against him.

I think this series will be interesting if they can do justice to it in the next episode. The special effect was nice; it reminded me of the first episode of Lovers of the Red Sky, where the demon was particularly effective. In terms of special effects, it was excellent.

I think the first episode was just a glimpse of what the three main lead was doing before they will all meet together. Although the two already met which is Van and Mi-Ho, John was still faraway from them. The two was met when Mi-Ho was suddenly attack by people who got possessed by evil not just once but twice already in the first episode. I think Mi-Ho had something in her maybe that's why or so I taught.

In this episode, John was also seen exorcising someone who had become possessed. I actually find the scene amusing. Cha Eun-Woo had a new look, but he still had a swag as a priest. When you see the scene, you will understand this part. While he was being exorcised, the music had a Kpop vibe to it, which made me want to laugh but I didn't because Cha Eun-Woo was serious. I guess it just made me smile.

Overall, it was satisfactory. This type of drama required excellent special effects to be appreciated, and they were present. I'm hoping the story becomes more interesting as more details and backstory are revealed. There were two kids shown who were experimented on with the devil's blood but turned out to be fine. If I'm not mistaken, this is Van and Goong Tang, who will hopefully be revealed in the next episodes.
