Vigilante (2023) - Series Review: "Powerful Pilot and Finale"

The story follows the narrative of Kim Ji-Young, a brilliant and talented Police Academy student. However, due to the legal system favoring criminals, who continue their wrongdoing even after early release or being found not guilty in court, Ji-Young decides to take matters into his own hands. Thus, the Vigilante is born—a figure who dispenses justice by eliminating those whom the law fails to punish. The Vigilante, a man driven to enforce justice where the legal system falls short, emerges as a force against the backdrop of a city plagued by the shortcomings of its laws.

Main Characters and Their Previous Works I'd watched. 

Nam Joo-Hyuk, renowned for his versatile roles in series like Start-Up, The School Nurse Files, and The Bride of Habaek, took on the character of Kim Ji-Young in Vigilante. Amidst his impressive portfolio, it was his portrayal of the justice-driven vigilante that stood out, depicting a man with a resolute fist and a heart committed to righteousness.

In this thrilling journey, Joo-Hyuk found strong support in co-stars who brought their own charisma to the screen. Yoo Ji-Tae, making a mark with his role as Jo Heon, added a layer of mystery and intrigue. Lee Joon Hyuk, familiar from the beloved drama "Are You Human?," contributed his talent to the ensemble. Kim So-Jin, known for her impactful role in "Through the Darkness," portrayed Choi Mi-Ryeo in Vigilante, completing the cast that fueled the intensity of the series.

Choi Jeong-Yeol, in his directorial debut for a drama series, takes the helm of this compelling narrative. While previously known as a screenwriter for Start-Up, he now orchestrates the visual storytelling with finesse. The script draws its roots from the webtoon crafted by CRG and Kim Kyu-San

Story

Vigilante's story impressed me, not entirely unique but with its own charm. Turning a police academy student into a vigilante was a clever twist, adding depth to Jo Heon's dilemma. The drama had a strong start and finish, though the middle was decent. Some parts were memorable, but not all of it stuck with me. As the final credits rolled, a sense of anticipation lingered in the air. The story had unfolded, yet it was evident that there were untold chapters waiting to be explored.  Should a new season materialize, may it be even more intriguing and powerful, weaving a narrative that surpasses the expectations set by its predecessor. 

Acting

Every member of the cast delivered a stellar performance, transcending the need for an abundance of lines. Instead, it was their facial expressions that became the storytellers, painting vivid emotions on the canvas of the narrative. Among them, Nam Joo-hyuk emerged as a revelation, unveiling a previously unseen facet of his acting prowess. His portrayal was a masterpiece, with his gaze in the first and last episodes leaving an indelible mark. Whether confronting those who perceived him as the vigilante or in moments of profound revelation, his acting resonated with a powerful intensity, turning each scene into a gripping spectacle. Nam Joo-hyuk's performance, nuanced and compelling, breathed life into the character, making it a standout element in the tapestry of the story.

Favorite Character on this Series

My favorite character in the series undoubtedly became Kim Ji-Young, a compelling figure who defied norms with unapologetic flaws, yet stood as a beacon of justice for the underprivileged. I am drawn to characters who, even while engaging in morally ambiguous actions, strive to rectify societal imbalances, and Ji-Young embodied this ethos perfectly. His intelligence and strength added layers to his persona, portraying a character of depth and resilience in the face of adversity. 

Favorite Actor/Actress on this Series

While I wasn't initially an avid fan of Nam Joo-Hyuk, his performance in this series unquestionably made him the standout actor. His portrayal was so impressive that even as someone not particularly invested, I found myself genuinely amazed by his talent.

Favorite Couple/Tandem on this Series

In this series, I found myself without a specific tandem to admire until the dynamic duo of Kim Ji-Young and Lee Seung-Woo unfolded in the final two episodes. Initially suspecting Lee Seung-Woo as the copycat, I was pleasantly surprised as their friendship emerged, revealing a deep care for one another. The unexpected bond between them showcased a shared belief that their actions were a pursuit of what they deemed right

In brief, it's a good drama with unique elements, even though some parts are decent to fill the 8 episodes. A quick watch, yet definitely worth it.
